I have plain paper/draft 300 dpi set on the 'configure-main' dialog but it still does not offer a colour+black option and still does not print black with a b&w text file - it is sort of dark grey.

My problem is slightly different. The 'configure-main-mode' setting offers only a colour option (i.e. colour+black' is missing) although the printer has a working BCI-3 catridge.
